A Mihrab Journal

Bismillahir Rahmānir Rahīm.

Just sketching some ideas for future possible Research. The academic scope of this Project is at first ‘sketch’-
(These were ideas I had for a Research Project that I no longer intend to develop but that still inform my work in quiet ways.)

Part One – A ‘Traditional’ World within a Non- Muslim Context.

– an exploration into the meaning and application of Hijab/Khimar and associated language/s of veiling, through/within both Traditional/Classical Islam and Modern Interpretations/Scholarship.

Part Two – an exploration into an Architecture of Veiling/Unveiling.

Woman as House/‘bayt’. Perspectives within Classical Muslim Scholarship and Contemporary Muslim Feminisms. Discovering the Metaphysics of the Islamic Garden and Courtyard.

Part Three – A Trashed House

– a journey into the breakdown of the Muslim family structure and a generational distribution of spiritual knowledge as a consequence of colonialism, war and migration.

Part Four – The Receptive Body

– recalling the importance of Body Ritual and Care including the Communal aspect, that has always been an essential part of Muslim cultural life, particularly for women.

Part Five – A Methodology of Recovery

– a focus on Healing Modalities with an emphasis/exploration of female agency within and without the Tradition.

Part Six – Transcending the Hybrid Chimera

– Creating frameworks of belonging for those who don’t ‘belong’. The New Story of being a convert or mixed race within Western Muslim ( and even cosmopolitan Muslim world cities). Making sure there is an accessible Hijra (migration) route/Destination at the communal level. With a focus on non established communities.

Part Seven – A Foundational Presence

– Early Childhood and creating Pedagogies of Peacemaking. Rhythms of Third Space Identities.
